Environmental allergies in dogs and cats, also known as atopy, is a hypersensitivity to one or more substances or “antigens” in the environment. It may be both seasonal (pollen) and nonseasonal (dust, dust mites and some moulds), with the primary symptom being itchy skin.

It’s important to note that food hypersensitivities and flea allergy dermatitis present with similar symptoms to atopy, making it important to obtain a proper diagnosis from a veterinarian to determine the cause of your pet’s itchy skin.

In addition to a prescribe treatment plan from a veterinarian, nutrition can also be used to help reduce the inflammation that is often associated with these sensitivities. Specifically, fish oil – a source of Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, EPA and DHA – can be provided via your pet’s diet or as an oral supplement.

Many of our Lifetime®, Wholesome Blend® and Wholesome Blend Naturally Fresh diets contain fish oil.
